On December 2nd, 2011 CSSers gathered to celebrate the holiday season! This was our last general meeting of Fall 2011 together. We played an icebreaker and had our White Elephant which shares a similar concept to Secret Santa; however, each person had a chance to “steal” the gift they wanted from another person with a few other restrictions. This year CSSers took part in a special gift giving and love giving night!

CSS Christmas Party Was held at Grand Paradise Restaurant. The night was filled with dancing, eating and enjoying each others company.

Khmer Student Coalition Conference

On November 5th, 2011, UCLA United Khmer Students (UKS) and The Cambodian Family of Orange County hosted the Khmer Student Coalition Conference 2011 at UCLA! Cambodian student organizations, many part of the Khmer Student Coalition (KSC) across California along with friends, families, colleagues, and supporters devoted their whole day to participate in this year’s conference themed, “We Are The Ones We’ve Been Waiting For.” The day consisted of workshops that further discuss the internal and external concerns within the Cambodian American community and as individual Cambodian Americans. By the end of the journey, there was an open mic session that topped the whole KSCC experience. We’d like to thank UKS and The Cambodian Family for their very successful work, it was the absolute greatest learning experience as to being a Cambodian American. KSCC 2012 will be hosted by Cambodian Student Association of CSU Fullerton on October 20–21, 2012. Save the date! Visit khmerstudentcoalition.com for more information.

Here is part 1 of 3 (: stay tuned for part two & three (:

Past & Upcoming Events

Past Events

On Friday, November 4, 2011 CSS held its Fifth General Meeting. During the meeting we discussed more culture show ideas. We discussed which cultural dance we’d perform and the theme of the show. We are still in the process of finalizing the theme and things for the show so come and share your ideas at the next CSS General meeting which is November 18th, 2011 same time, same place. Other than discussing culture show ideas we also played icebreakers and had a culture lesson where we learned a few khmer dances.

On Tuesday, November 8, 2011, CSS and The Department of Asian American Studies had the opportunity to sponsor an exclusive screening of Enemies of The People, directed by Thet Sambath and produced by Rob Lemkin. Enemies of The People is a documentary that is significant to the understanding the ideology, purposes, and downfall of the Khmer Rouge with the interview of Brother #2, Nuon Chea, as well as, regional to local soldiers, Suon and Khuon, whom confessed to committing some of the mass killings during the Khmer Rouge period. Also, for the first time ever in the Long Beach community, Mr.Thet and Mr.Lemkin were able to take time and answer questions about their documentary. We appreciate their great efforts to make an appearance in Long Beach and create an important primary source that will help the current, aftermath, and future generations understand the history of the Khmer Rouge.
Visit www.enemiesofthepeople.com for more updates or donate to fund their next sequel, Suspicious Minds, which goes further to understanding the reasons behind the mass killings.
Enemies of The People DVD will be released by January 2012.
